Kelley Rae Roberts' book Taking Flight inspired this drawing. If you haven't checked out her website you should--it's beautiful. She also recommended the Inspire Me Thursday website. It gives a prompt each week for doing art. I looked it over today and really liked the concept. The prompts haven't been updated since early December, but I thought I'd post some art anyway. Sunday Scribblings have been fun for me to work on each week, so I thought I'd add an art prompt (keeping with my resolutions).
I'm still searching for my unique style in art and voice in writing. I guess I'm hoping the more I dabble in various types, the more chance I have of finding my own. I'll be moving Wing Tips to Wednesday since I'm doing art on Thursday. Here's my new schedule:
Saturday/Sunday: Sunday Scribblings
Monday: Quote Notes
Wednesday: Wing Tips
Thursday/Friday: Inspire Me Thursday
What are your favorite websites or inspiration sites? And if you have any tips on voice or style, I would love to hear them.
Nice & intriguing drawing! It makes me want to see more!
ReplyDeleteThank you for commenting me, aren't comments fun?
Thank you Brenda. And yes, comments are great. I love feeling like I'm in a conversation with someone.
ReplyDeleteFor me, finding my voice has been a matter of not thinking about it. The novel that I wrote last year and is now under contract happened when I just wrote naturally in my favorite genre, listening to lots and lots of Muse.
ReplyDeleteAnother way for me to pinpoint my voice type was writing a short story that was recently published. Short stories are pretty straightforward and I think have the venue for letting our voices shine. One reviewer said my particular voice in fiction appeared as a few very carefully chosen well placed words. I'm a minimalist. But a friend of mine is a maximist and has a poetic pen absolutely opposite from me. So maybe start there? Decide whether you're a minimalist or maximist?
M. Gray, I'm definitely a minimalist. The stories I've sold were short...VERY short (one was only 25 words). I used to be ashamed of that--wanted to write more flowery. But I'm learning to embrace it and your story certainly helps!
ReplyDeleteHello Cathrine. When my nephew was studying graphic art one book he was required to work through was "Drawing on the right side of the brain" bybty Edwards. I borrowed it and after doing some of the exercises I was amazed. Check it out at

I've never tried painting but love drawing maybe it's time to try painting too. Writing comes easily to me and I find myself having to restrict my words, just like this comment. Thanks for your patience.
Thanks for the tip Geoff! I'll be checking that book out.
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful!! wow! I love the ideas and the paintings...so inspiring! I agree with Brenda...just makes me want to see more! More more!! :)
ReplyDeleteLOL Thanks Sis.
ReplyDeleteHOLY COW. I am so glad you posted this. I've been dying to see your work, and now that I have seen this...WOW.
ReplyDeleteI mean, I will read your words any day, because you're a talented writer. But I would just as quickly pick up a book of your art. Fantastic.
Wow! Thanks SarahAnn. I think my head just grew two inches.
ReplyDeleteI'm no artist, so great job on that!
ReplyDeleteAnd for finding your voice in writing, I think it's all in how well you know your characters. Once you "find" them, they tell the story in their own voice.
Thanks Elana. I must not know them well enough yet.
ReplyDeletewow - so lovely!!!
ReplyDeleteI struggle with saying things more eloquently-- I have more of a choppy style. But recently I read a book that had a choppy style too-- it's called WAKE and she did choppy really well! And so it inspired me to just keep going and use my strengths!
Christina, yay a co-chopper! I'll look forward to reading Wake.
ReplyDeleteSorry for my lack of comments lately, I've been trying to efficientize my blog following and such, not to mention my work office has been VERY busy. Anyway, enough excuses. Here I am and I wanted to say that finding your art/style can be misleading. Some people fall into very specific categories, while some of us (me included) are a little bit of everything. The "Jack-of-all-trades" syndrome. Could you be one?
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm enjoying the Lightning Thief, although the reading is going slowly, since I'm reading it to the kids at night 1 chapter at a time and only every few days or so. I need to beef up my 'reading to them' schedule.
ReplyDeleteVoidwalker, Jack-of-all-trades...hmmm, could be. As for The Lightning Thief, I don't know how you keep from reading ahead. I tore through those books.
ReplyDeleteI struggle with voice sometimes, too. If I get the voice right, the writing flows. If the voice is wrong....ugh.
ReplyDeleteShelley
Shelley, you do? I know, it's so frustrating.
